Shawn and the Wolf are a unique and highly accessible jazz duo that combines trombone with guitar, two instruments seldom heard together. While their music is definitely rooted in a jazz sensibility, they take inspiration from a variety of genres, creating arrangements of tunes like The Beatles' 'Money Can't Buy Me Love' and Burt Bacharach's 'Close to You'. Their music bridges gaps between genres and invites listeners in to an intimate and friendly musical space.

The big sound the duo creates - that can lead you to believe it's more than trombone and guitar you're hearing - is due in large part to Wolf's technique. His playing incorporates bass and percussive sounds not normally associated with the guitar, and he also uses looping techniques to great effect. Together the duo creates music that is deeply infectious and full of life.

Trombonist, Shawn Grocott, has made Germany his home since 1995. He left his native Canada after receiving his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Regina, in his home-town. He continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold as well as at the Musikhochschule Lübeck where he received his Artist’s Diploma.

Shawn’s musical tastes are widely varied which tends to take him in many different musical directions. Among his interests are: orchestral, big band, chamber, jazz and new music. In addition to performances with “Shawn and the Wolf”, he can also be heard playing with the brass ensemble „World Brass“, the brass quartet „Brass Unlimited“, and from time to time as a guest with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Nord-West- Deutsche Philharmonie Herford and Landestheater Detmold, as well as other projects. Since October of 2009 he is also a trombone instructorat the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold and leads the Hochschul Big Band.

Seit 1995 lebt der kanadische Posaunist, Shawn Grocott, in Deutschland. Nachdem er sein Bachelor of Music Education Diplom von der University of Regina in Kanada bekam, zog Shawn Grocott nach Detmold und studierte dort Posaune an der Hochschule für Musik und auch an der Musikhochschule in Lübeck, wo er sein Studium mit der Künstlerischen Diplomprüfung abschloss.

Shawn Grocotts musikalische Interessen sind sehr variiert. Er interessiert sich für viele Musikrichtungen; spielt sinfonische Musik und Big-Band Swing, Kammermusik, Jazz und auch neue Musik ob komponiert oder frei improvisiert. Zusätzlich zu Auftritten mit “Shawn and the Wolf” spielt er auch im international besetzten Blechbläserensemble „World Brass“, im Blechbläserquartett „Brass Unlimited“, und spielt gelegentlich als Gast bei der Deutschen Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Nord-West Deutschen Philharmonie Herford und beim Detmolder Landestheater. Seit Oktober 2009 ist er auch Dozent für Posaune an der Hochschule für Musik, Detmold und leitet die Hochschul Big Band.

Wolfgang Meyer – Musical Biography

Wolfgang Meyer began his musical career as a violist in various symphony orchestras. His artistic journey expanded through performances as a trombonist and guitarist in jazz and big bands, work as a church music conductor, and engagements as a musical theater guitarist and stage musician.

As a jazz guitarist, he performs in the duo Shawn & the Wolf and as an accompanist for Thomas Quasthoff. In these formations, he has appeared at prestigious festivals and venues worldwide, including the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Jazztage Dresden, and the Jazzfest Bonn. His international performances have also taken him to renowned jazz festivals in Canada, Brazil, and Albania.

Additionally, he has played in esteemed concert halls such as Wigmore Hall in London and in legendary jazz clubs like Porgy & Bess in Vienna and A-Trane in Berlin.

His experience with ensembles of various styles and instrumentations shapes his distinctive guitar playing. At times, he makes his guitar sound like both a bass and a drum, creating a fascinating range of textures and rhythms.

Wolfgang Meyer – Musikalische Vita
Wolfgang Meyer begann seine musikalische Laufbahn als Bratschist in verschiedenen Sinfonieorchestern. Konzerte als Posaunist und Gitarrist in Jazz- und Bigbands, kirchenmusikalische Arbeit als Dirigent sowie Engagements als Musicalgitarrist und Schauspielmusiker prägten seinen vielseitigen Werdegang.

Als Jazzgitarrist konzertiert er im Duo Shawn & the Wolf sowie als Begleiter von Thomas Quasthoff. In diesen Besetzungen war er bei bedeutenden Festivals und Konzertorten weltweit zu hören, darunter das Verbier Festival in der Schweiz, das Edinburgh International Festival, die Jazztage Dresden und das Jazzfest Bonn. Internationale Auftritte führten ihn zu renommierten Jazzfestivals in Kanada, Brasilien und Albanien.
